Interactive Birthday Cards and Invitations: Blow Out the Candles, Shake the Snow Globe, Light the Diya

An interactive card opens with a gesture instead of a tap: you blow on your phone to put out the candles, shake it to swirl a snow globe, or press and hold to light a diya. It turns opening a card into a little moment — kids especially love blowing out the candles. Every gesture also opens with a tap, so nobody is ever stuck.
Which gestures can open a digital card?
Four gestures work well on phones: blow, shake, hold and lift. Each one suits a different kind of design.
| Gesture | How it works | Suits | Try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blow | Blow on the phone; the microphone hears the rush of air and the candles go out | Birthday cards and invitations | Sprinkle Party |
| Shake | Shake the phone; the motion sensor swirls the snow globe or develops a polaroid | Christmas greetings, playful weddings | Carousel Snow Globe |
| Hold | Press and hold; a ring fills and the flame lights | Diwali greetings, Indian weddings, sky lanterns | Akhand Jyoti |
| Lift | Swipe up to lift a veil or chunari | Indian weddings | Laal Chunari |
How does "blow out the candles" work on a phone?
The card asks to use the microphone for a moment and listens for a strong, steady rush of air — the sound of blowing — for about a fifth of a second. Then the candles go out and the card opens.
The microphone only listens on that screen and stops as soon as the candles are out; nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. If the guest says no to the microphone, or their phone doesn't have one available, a tap opens the card instead.
How does "shake the snow globe" work?
The card reads the phone's motion sensor and opens after two quick shakes. iPhones ask permission first, so the card shows a "Shake to open" button that asks; on Android it usually just works. A tap opens it too.
Will an interactive card work on every phone?
Yes — the gestures are an extra, never a lock. Every interactive opening also opens with a tap, so a guest on an older phone, a laptop or with permissions switched off still sees the card. A short hint under the opening ("Blow out the candles to open — or tap") tells them what to do.
Which occasions suit an interactive card?
Birthdays are the natural fit — blowing out candles is the birthday moment. Snow globes suit Christmas, holding a diya suits Diwali, and lifting a veil or lighting a sacred fire suits Indian weddings.
- Kids' birthdays: children blow out the candles on the invitation, then again at the party.
- Grown-up birthdays and milestones: a champagne-and-candles card for a 40th — see milestone birthday wording.
- Festival greetings: shake a Christmas snow globe or light a Diwali diya — see Christmas and New Year greetings.
- Birthday wishes: send a birthday card the person blows out themselves — see digital birthday cards.
Which PixerInvite designs are interactive?
PixerInvite has birthday designs you blow out (Sprinkle Party, Galaxy Cake, Golden Toast, Little Smash Cake), snow globes you shake (Carousel Snow Globe, Snow Globe, and Polaroid Love develops when shaken), and designs you hold (Akhand Jyoti, Agni Saakshi, Sky Lantern Vows) or lift (Laal Chunari). Every one also opens with a tap. Use any of them as an invitation or as a wish card — see all designs.
Frequently asked questions
Can you blow out candles on a digital birthday card?
Yes. Some digital cards use the phone's microphone to hear you blow — the candles go out and the card opens. A tap opens it too if the microphone is off.
Does a blow-out-the-candles card record my voice?
No. It only listens on the opening screen for the sound of blowing and stops as soon as the candles are out; nothing is recorded or sent.
Why does my iPhone ask before a snow globe card opens?
iPhones ask permission before a website can read the motion sensor. Tap the "Shake to open" button and allow it — or just tap the card to open it.
What if a guest can't use the gesture?
Every interactive opening also opens with a tap, so nobody is stuck.
